Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

SubtitleTranslatorFree ("we", "us") is a free, browser-based subtitle translation tool operated by Shrestha Tripathi. For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Shrestha Tripathi is the data controller for the limited personal data described in this policy. 2. Your subtitle files never leave your device

This is the core of how SubtitleTranslatorFree is built, not just a promise. When you open an .srt or .vtt file, the file is read by your browser using the local File API. It is parsed in memory on your machine, translated using the translation model that is built into your browser, and written back out as a new file that your browser saves directly to your download folder.

At no point is the file, its filename, or any of the subtitle text transmitted to us or to any third party. We operate no server that is capable of receiving your file. SubtitleTranslatorFree is a static website: once the page has loaded, the translation work happens entirely inside your browser tab, and it continues to work with your network disconnected.

Because translation is performed by the on-device model shipped with your browser, the subtitle text is not sent to a cloud translation API. Your browser may download the language model itself from its vendor the first time you use a given language pair; that download contains no data from you.

3. Information we do process

We process a small amount of data, and only this:

  • Analytics data. We use Google Analytics 4 to count page views and understand which features get used. This collects standard web analytics information such as your approximate geographic region (derived from IP and not stored by us), device and browser type, pages visited, referring site, and coarse interaction events — for example, that a translation was started, roughly how many subtitle lines were in the file (as a broad bucket such as "100-499"), and which browser translation engine was available. It never includes filenames or any subtitle text.
  • Server logs. Our hosting and CDN provider (Cloudflare Pages) automatically logs requests for the site's static files, including IP address, user agent and timestamp, for security and abuse prevention. We do not build user profiles from these logs.
  • Email you send us. If you contact us, we process your email address and message solely to reply to you.

Our lawful bases under GDPR are our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site (server logs), your consent where required for analytics and advertising cookies, and taking steps at your request where you contact us.

4. Cookies and similar technologies

Analytics. Google Analytics sets cookies to distinguish repeat visits and measure traffic. You can opt out across all sites with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising (if shown). We may display ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies (such as the DART cookie) to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices.

Local storage. The app may store small preferences (such as your last selected language) in your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device, is never sent to us, and is cleared when you clear your browser data.

5. Third-party services

  • Cloudflare Pages — static hosting and CDN.
  • Google Analytics — aggregate usage measurement.
  • Google AdSense — ad serving, where ads are displayed.
  • Your browser vendor — supplies the on-device translation model your browser downloads and runs locally.

Each of these providers processes data under its own privacy policy. None of them receives your subtitle files.

6. Your rights

If you are in the EEA or UK (GDPR), you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, the right to withdraw consent at any time, and the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

If you are a California resident (CCPA/CPRA), you have the right to know what personal information is collected and how it is used, the right to request deletion, the right to correct inaccurate information, and the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell your personal information for money. Use of advertising cookies may be considered "sharing" under the CPRA; you can opt out using the advertising links in section 4 or your browser's Global Privacy Control signal.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@subtitletranslatorfree.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising them. Note that because your subtitle files never reach us, there is no file data for us to access, export or delete.

7. Children's privacy

SubtitleTranslatorFree is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

8. International data transfers

Our hosting, analytics and advertising providers operate globally, so the limited data described in section 3 may be processed on servers outside your country, including in the United States. These providers rely on safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

9. Data retention

Analytics data is retained according to our Google Analytics configuration (currently up to 14 months) and then automatically deleted. CDN security logs are retained for a short period by our hosting provider. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to resolve your enquiry. Subtitle file content is never retained anywhere by us, because we never receive it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product or the law changes. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version. Material changes will be highlighted on the site.
